A More Inclusive Transport Strategy for York
York Disability Rights Forum’s Access Subgroup is working to ensure that transport planning in York reflects the needs and rights of disabled people.
Transport is about much more than getting from one place to another. It affects whether people can work, learn, socialise, access services, enjoy family life and participate fully in their community. When transport systems create barriers, disabled people can be excluded from everyday life.
Our work on A More Inclusive Transport Strategy for York uses the social model of disability and the human rights model of disability to examine how transport policies and infrastructure affect disabled people. We are calling for transport planning that is built around the principles of:
- Unity – ensuring nobody is left behind.
- Accessibility – removing barriers to participation.
- Inclusivity – involving disabled people in shaping decisions that affect their lives.
The project highlights the importance of meaningful co-production with disabled people, accessible public transport, inclusive street design, and protecting access for those who rely on vehicles as an essential mobility aid.
